ABOUT TAEKWONDO

taekwondo
About Taekwondo

There are many different styles of Taekwondo in the world. The most popular styles are World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and International Taekwondo Federation (ITF). Taekwondo in the Olympic Games is based on the World Taekwondo style. Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters) and World Taekwondo are the governing bodies of the World Taekwondo style. Gaonhae Taekwondo teaches Taekwondo based on the World Taekwondo style.

In Singapore, the World Taekwondo style is governed by the Singapore National Olympic Committee (SNOC) and Singapore Taekwondo Federation (STF). Gaonhae Taekwondo is an affiliate of STF. All gradings and competitions must be endorsed and sanctioned by STF.

In Taekwondo, we practice several arts. "Poomsae" is the display of a set of attacking and defensive movements in grace. A good Poomsae displays accuracy, power, rhythm and grace. "Kyorugi" is sparring. In the olympic sport, point sparring is where opponents strike a certain body part for a number of points. "Ho-Shinsul" is taekwondo self-defense, to unarmed and negate any aggression. "Kyeokpa" is the breaking of objects through the use of hands and feet. "Sibeom-dan" is putting all the above into an entertainment showcase.

Grade progression at Gaonhae Taekwondo is as follows:

Grade Progression (Colour Belts)

Grade Progression (Poom/Black Belts)

Note:

  • Black belts under the age of 15 are called Poom Belt/Junior Black Belt

  • Upon their 15th birthday, they are eligible to convert to Black Belt.
